HTML Editor: Numbered List

Within the HTML editor, you can create a numbered list or convert existing paragraphs into a numbered list.

Start and Stop a Numbered List

  1. Click the Insert/Remove Numbered List button. An item numbered "1." will be inserted.

  2. Once you have entered the text for that item, press the Enter/Return key to insert another numbered item. Repeat this step for each numbered item you wish to add.
  3. When the list is complete, press the Enter/Return key twice to exit list mode.

Convert Paragraphs to a List

  1. Highlight one or more paragraphs with either the mouse or a combination of shift and arrow keys.
  2. Click the Insert/Remove Numbered List button.

Convert a List to Paragraphs

To convert a numbered list to paragraphs, select the affected list items, then click the Insert/Numbered Bulleted List button.

Convert a Numbered List to a Bulleted List

Highlight the entire list, then click the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button (next to the Insert/Remove Numbered List button). The list format will change.

Create a Nested List

Note: This option is not available in text areas with reduced HTML editor options.

  1. Insert a new numbered list item under the item of which it will be a sub-item.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button to access the list options menu.

    Note: If you do not see a down arrow, then you may be using a reduced HTML editor.

  3. Click the Increase Indent option.

    Increase and Decrease indent options are accessed by clicking the down arrow next to the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button.

  4. To indent an item even further, highlight the list item, click the down arrow next to the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button, then click Increase Indent again.
  5. To decrease an indent, click the down arrow next to the Insert/Remove Bulleted List button and click Decrease Indent.

Change the Numbering Scheme

This option allows you to switch between numbers and letters or Roman numerals in the list numbering.

  1. Select one or more numbered list items.
  2. Right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) to reveal the list context menu. Select Numbered List Properties to open the pop-up window.

  3. From the Type pull-down menu, select the numbering scheme you wish to use, then click OK. The numbers will change to the type you selected.

    Numbered List options include:

    • Numbers (1,2,3)
    • Lowercase Letters (a,b,c)
    • Uppercase Letters (A,B,C)
    • Small Roman Numerals (i,ii,iii)
    • Large Roman Numerals (I,II,III)

Change First Number in List

This option allows you to start a list with a number other than 1 (or a letter other than "A").

  1. Place your cursor within the numbered list.
  2. Right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) to reveal the list context menu. Select Numbered List Properties to open the pop-up window.

  3. In the Start field, enter the number you wish the list to start with, then click OK. The start number will change; if letters are used, then the start letter will change according to its position in the alphabet.

Note: You can also use "0" and negative numbers in numbered lists.
